The underlying principle of all ZCBF initiatives is that of self-sustainability. The ZCBF was set up as a facilitating agent meant to bring projects together with the people and funding to make them happen, nurture them to independence, then step back and watch them grow. This has not always been as simple as it sounds, and in the past this lead to the ZCBF becoming involved with the ongoing management of projects for extended periods of time, often becoming over-extended in terms of its resources. Over the past two to three years, there has been a strong focus on consolidation in the interest of the future sustainability of the organisation, and many of the early ZCBF initiatives and partnership projects are now operating independently.

These include Wonderkids Educare Centre, and the Downstream Aluminium Centre for Technology, while other projects have found fitting homes within other organisations, for example, the Zululand Career Centre is now managed as part of Umfolozi College, a local public Further Education and Training College.

The continued, independent success of these projects is a tribute to the ZCBF, as they continue to deliver on the vision of an organisation committed to innovative problem solving.

The ZCBF continues to oversee the management of Amangwe Village, one of its flagship projects, and in the past year has entered into an exciting new partnership venture in the disaster relief arena, with Tahzade Disaster Management Services, namely the Fold Away House project.
